Research Associate at CERIC-ERIC - Renewals project

The Central European Research Infrastructure Consortium - CERIC–ERIC (), is an integrated multidisciplinary Research Infrastructure open for basic and applied research in all fields of material and biomaterial sciences and nanotechnology. CERIC has been established by integrating advanced research facilities based in 8 countries (Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania and Slovenia) into a unique European entity supporting the creation of basic and applied knowledge and promoting the mobility of researchers in an international multicultural scientific environment.

The research associate position is open for the CERIC-ERIC research project Renewals. The successful candidate will be involved in the development of a Graphene Liquid Cell (GLC) via X-ray lithography suitable for cross-talk characterization of bio-cellular specimens with atomic force, photon and electron-based microscopes at Elettra, Charles University in Prague and National Institute of Materials Physics in Bucharest.

Job description

The successful candidate will be involved in the activity of Renewals project and will be based in Trieste at Elettra synchrotron, the Italian Partner Facility within CERIC-ERIC. He/She will work with the scientists at Elettra in order to accomplish the experimental program of Renewals. In particular, he/she will be responsible for the design and fabrication of the GLCs under the supervision of Elettra and TUG project partners. He/She will collaborate with the research staff at SISSI, TwinMic and IUVS beamlines at Elettra for the optimization of the microscopy set-ups and testing the produced GLCs in experiments focused on nanotoxicological aspects related to Al NPs uptake by lung cells.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • PhD. in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science or related disciplines. PhD students close to completion are also eligible.
  • Training and experience in the use of a diverse portfolio of fabrication equipment in a high- and low-class cleanroom environment. This should include optical lithography, deposition and etch equipment, e.g. dry (RIE) and wet processes, and preferentially embossing processes and other non-traditional fabrication routes.
  • Experience in the processing of a variety of materials is desirable. Experience with graphene manipulation is an asset.
  • Ability to use standard metrology equipment, e.g. profilometers, optical microscopes, AFM’s, SEMs, etc., and a willingness to learn spectroscopy and microscopy techniques such as FTIR, Raman and XRF.
  • Additional experience in device design and process development will be considered as another advantage.
  • Additional experience in cell culture and standard bio-assays will be considered as another advantage.
  • Skills to prioritize, respecting scheduled timetable and deadlines, and to interact with multidisciplinary and international partners.
  • Good oral and written communication skills in English are essential.


  • Duration – 12 months, renewable up to 36 months according to performance evaluation.
  • The salary will depend on previous experience and qualifications of the Candidate.
