CERIC is Young Researchers Friendly HOW?

Two-steps application procedure

For young, less experienced users, CERIC offers open access with a two-steps application procedure:

  • A first version of the research proposal can be submitted at the first deadline, to be pre-evaluated by the technical and scientific personnel of the CERIC facilities.
  • On the basis of the suggestions received, the applicant has two weeks to edit and improve the proposal.
  • The final version of the proposal can be submitted at the second deadline and will be evaluated by a peer-review international evaluation committee.

Note: Expert users may decide to submit their proposals directly at the second deadline.

CERIC awards for high quality publications and conference presentations

CERIC users with the most successful proposals are eligible to receive rewards to cover the full cost of open access publications, as well as conference fees for presenting the obtained results.

The age of the first author/presenter, if below 35, will be considered favorably.

Training activities for young researchers

CERIC supports and actively participates in educational activities such as the HERCULES school, providing training for students, postdoctoral and senior scientists in the field of Neutron and Synchrotron Radiation for condensed matter studies. In 2016, the Italian Representing Entity of CERIC-ERIC, Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, welcomed a group of 16 PhD and post-doc students who attended lectures, hands-on activities and tutorials and who have been acquainted with the scientific possibilities offered by CERIC.

Training activities for pupils

CERIC contributes to set up a network between schools and research infrastructures to promote scientific careers among young high-school pupils. The project PaGES, funded by the Italian region Friuli Venezia Giulia, guided pupils through the planning, management, execution, evaluation and dissemination of the results of a scientific experiment, giving them the opportunity to learn about all different stages of a scientific project and to make more conscious choices for their future career. CERIC will carry on similar activities in the future, both in Italy and in the other countries participating in the consortium.
