PRESS RELEASE: 10 years of CERIC: a review of its Impacts and a Look to the Future
Trieste, 19 November 2024 – Central European Research Infrastructure Consortium, CERIC-ERIC, will celebrate its 10th anniversary in Brussels on the morning of the 21st of November. The event will be a unique opportunity to discuss the research infrastructure policies and recall the steps that led to the formation of the Consortium, highlighting the impacts that CERIC-ERIC had—and will have—on the participating Countries and on the European Research Area (ERA).
The meeting, hosted at the NH Grand Sablon from 9 am to 1 pm, will be opened by Ambassador Stefano Verrecchia (Deputy Permanent Representative of Italy to the EU) and other authorities and organised into two panels, which will be attended by representatives of the European Commission and EU Countries, leading European institutions and Research Infrastructures.
The first one (‘Research Infrastructures Policy: Reflections and Future Pathways’) aims to reflect on the achievements and impacts of Research Infrastructures, Technology Infrastructures and European Research Infrastructure Consortia (ERICs), including CERIC-ERIC, exploring different ways to enhance their effectiveness in the future, including policies at both the national and European Commission level: ‘the establishment of this Consortium has been proposed by the Governments of Centre East Europe – explains Carlo Rizzuto, Chair of CERIC-ERIC General Assembly – for the scope of re-balancing the east-west divide in Research Infrastructure and ensuring a competitive growth of excellent research in this part of Europe’.
The second panel (‘Advancing Science at CERIC: Current Successes and Future Potential’) will highlight CERIC-ERIC’s scientific achievements and impacts over the past decade and discuss the challenges and opportunities that will shape its future: ‘Since its establishment, CERIC-ERIC has significantly boosted scientific productivity and quality across member countries – comments Jana Kolar, Executive Director of the Consortium – strengthening research capacity, fostering technological innovation, and expanding EU collaborations. By facilitating excellent, diverse and impactful research, we’re proud to be driving scientific excellence and innovation across Europe’.

CERIC-ERIC is a European research infrastructure consortium established by the European Commission and the Government of eight Countries in 2014. It offers researchers and industry access to more than 60 experimental analytical and synthesis techniques in advanced research facilities in eight Central and Eastern European countries, and associated institutions. This supports multidisciplinary research down to the micro- and nano-level in the fields of advanced materials, biomaterials and nanotechnology. In CERIC’s facilities, materials can be analysed and their structure investigated by combining techniques based on the use of electrons, ions, neutrons and photons.
Access to CERIC’s research services is through international calls for proposals that allow free access to multiple techniques and reward the best projects, provided their results are open and published. In addition, there is commercial access for proprietary research open to companies, and support for technology transfer.
